More than 5,000 Queenslanders have been plunged into quarantine as the state faces a rapid growth in daily Covid-19 cases.
It comes as mask mandates were implemented in recent days for shopping centres, with masks now mandatory in cinemas, theatres and for hospitality staff who are going from table to table.
Chief health officer John Gerrard said there were 79 confirmed cases of Omicron.
As at 22 December Queensland Health data showed that 227 of the cases were being investigated, labelled as Interstate, other or awaiting assignment.
The majority of cases were located on the Gold Coast (72) followed by Brisbane’s Metro South district (47).
Metro North has 35 cases, 25 on the Sunshine Coast and 12 in West Moreton.
Townsville (11), Darling Downs (5), Cairns (10) and Children's Health Queensland (3) also had cases.
Dr Gerrard said not every case was being picked up by Queensland Health.
“As time goes by we will wind back the public health response so we won’t investigate each to the nth degree,” he said.
There were 5,408 people who had active quarantine notices as at 22 December, with 2,211 of those in the Metro North district.
Metro South had a total of 1,039 people while the Gold Coast had 942.
Cairns (182), Townsville (151), West Moreton (302), Sunshine Coast (241), Darling Downs (102) and Central Queensland (57 also had active quarantine notices.
