A young child has died from Covid-19 at the Queensland Children’s Hospital.
Queensland Health confirmed the tragic news in a statement late on Tuesday.
“Children’s Health Queensland can confirm that, sadly, a 23-month-old child died from COVID-19 at the Queensland Children’s Hospital on Sunday, 24 July 2022.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to the child’s family.”
It is believed that the toddler is the 14th child in the 0-9 age bracket to lose their life to the virus in Australia, and that the child is also the youngest person in Queensland to die from the virus.
Earlier this year, five-year-old Queenslander Ruby Boston died from the virus after battling it for two weeks.
The news comes as new modelling released by the Palaszczuk government on Tuesday predicted that the current wave of the virus would be about 50 per cent worse than the last.
Experts initially expected hospitalisations to peak at around 1000 cases but now forecast them to reach 1660.
The peak, which would be about 78 per cent worse than the highest single day of hospitalisations in January’s wave of 928 patients, is expected in late August.
Approximately 66,000 cases of Covid are active across the state and 21 people lost their lives in the last 24 hours, while 1170 people are being treated in hospitals across the state, including 33 in the intensive care unit.
