The Gold Coast’s Covid crisis is spiralling, with more than 50 lifesavers forced into quarantine after a junior clubbie tested positive.
The young lifesaver is the daughter of a Biggera Waters man aged in his 50s who was a confirmed case linked to the Eaton Hills aviation worker cluster.
She was among 52 clubbies taking part in a school holiday bronze medallion course at Southport Surf Club this week.
Surf Life Saving Queensland Gold Coast co-ordinator Nathan Fife said the course was cancelled and Queensland Health was alerted immediately the positive test was confirmed.
“All the course participants were told to get tested and isolate at home for 14 days,” he said.
“The club was onto it very quickly and did everything right.”
Mr Fife said the surf club had been deep cleaned but the popular licensed supporters club at Main Beach was not affected.
He said the surf club was now scrambling to make up patrol numbers for the long weekend.
“Fifty-two members is a lot and we’re doing everything we can to help them make sure they can fill the patrols,” he said.
Queensland Health confirmed the female participant tested positive on Wednesday and was included in the figures announced at Thursday morning’s press conference.
