Revealed: Locations of Qld’s 16,688 active Covid cases

Queensland has recorded 3587 new Covid-19 cases overnight, including more than a dozen kids from two vulnerable youth detention centres. Here’s where all 16,688 active cases are.

'Significant increase' in Covid cases expected in Queensland

Queensland recorded 3587 new Covid-19 cases, with five people including two pregnant women in intensive care.

One cluster has torn through two vulnerable youth detention centres with 22 youths and 11 staff members testing positive for the virus.

The Brisbane Youth Detention Centre was placed into lockdown last week after a positive case was detected, but the numbers have since swollen to 15 — with three staff and 12 young people testing positive.

Ten young people and eight staff members have also tested positive at the West Moreton Youth Detention Centre.

A Department of Children and Youth Justice spokeswoman said that 84 youths were tested across the two facilities and the 22 young people that had Covid were showing only mild symptoms.

“They are each being managed in a dedicated quarantine accommodation section and are also being isolated from other young people,” the spokeswoman said.

“Health staff are on-site caring for these young people and along with detention centre staff are adhering to strict infection control guidelines and in full PPE.”

The Department said the “vast majority” of staff and young people at all three of the state’s youth detention centres are fully vaccinated.

Only a “small number” of detention centre employees are subject to an exemption which allows them to continue working with daily PCR testing and PPE until January 17 — at which time they will need to be fully vaccinated in order to keep working at the centre.

Chief health officer Dr John Gerrard said the daily case number was “smaller” than expected, likely due to lower testing rates over the New Year public holiday.

The case numbers were recorded between 7pm on December 31 and 7pm on January 1, reflecting the reporting period and taking the total active cases to 16,688.

Every region has now recorded at least one case since the beginning of the pandemic, with only two not currently dealing with active cases.

The Gold Coast has the highest number of active cases in Queensland with a total of 1,100, according to data from Queensland Health as of 7pm on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Metro South recorded 533 active cases followed by Children’s Health Queensland (439), Metro North (282) and Wide Bay (279).

Elsewhere, Darling Downs (177), Central Queensland (192), Sunshine Coast (173) and West Moreton (196) have all recorded just under 200 cases.

Only the North West and South West regions, as outlined by Queensland Health, do not have active cases, while new cases continue to surge in metropolitan areas.

Active quarantine notices have been issued to 5,300 people in Queensland meanwhile 86.6 per cent of the state is now fully vaccinated.
