Queensland COVID testing lines blow out

Queensland’s daily case numbers continue to soar as the Omicron variant moves into previously untouched parts of the state.

Education Minister Grace Grace announced at Thursday’s press conference that Queensland had recorded 2,222 new Covid-19 cases, an increase of 633 on the previous day’s figures.

1,414 of the new cases recorded in the previous 24 hours were locally acquired.

Across Queensland, every region has now recorded at least one case since the beginning of the pandemic, with only two not currently dealing with active cases.

Only the North West and South West regions, as outlined by Queensland Health, do not have active cases, while new cases continue to surge in metropolitan areas.

The Gold Coast has the greatest number of active cases in Queensland with 543, while the Sunshine Coast (237), Metro North (225), and Wide Bay (151) all have greater than 150.

There are active cases in remote parts of the state too, with the Central West and the Torres and Cape regions still managing singular cases.

Further north, there is a spike in active cases for Cairns (69), Townsville (88), and Central (84).

Active quarantine notices have been issued to 5,555 people in Queensland.

It comes as Prime Minister Scott Morrison will seek to redefine ‘close contacts’ at the national cabinet to implicate fewer people in proximity to positive cases.

The sunshine state has now given first-doses to 90.5% of the eligible population, while 86.2% are fully-vaccinated.
