Confidence in Palaszczuk government at 'rock bottom'

Queenslanders living in the Brisbane, Goondiwindi, Noosa and Hinchinbrook council areas would be the best protected against Covid-19 should an outbreak occur, as vaccination rates soar above 70 per cent.

New local government area jab data revealed more than 70 per cent of the adult population in those LGAs and the Southern Downs had received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine as at September 27.

The biggest jumps in vaccination rates since the beginning of September have been in Logan, Ipswich, the Lockyer Valley and the Burdekin, which comes amid a concerted push to increase vaccination rates, including a no-holds-barred “Super Pfizer Weekend” and the addition of more jab clinics.

But five out of ten of Australia’s least Covid-19 protected LGAs are in Queensland, with less than half of the residents in those areas yet to get even a single jab.

Just 46 per cent of people aged 15 and older in the Charters Towers and Central Highlands LGAs have received at least one dose of the jab.

Those rates drop to just 35.2 per cent and 30 per cent in Isaac — centred in the mining town of Moranbah — and the Aboriginal community of Cherbourg.

Vaccination rates in Yarrabah, just 50kms out of Cairns, are now at 29.8 per cent of the adult population receiving at least one dose and is the second least protected LGA in the nation.

In a town with an estimated population of 1919 people, this means just 517 people have had at least one jab.

Opposition Leader David Crisafulli earlier this week called on all levels of government to set up “culturally appropriate hubs” in Aboriginal communities to give them confidence to get the jab.

“We need to mobilise clinics in these communities as a matter of urgency,” he said.

“We cannot wait for the virus to get into our state before we act.

“We must immediately open more places and give Queenslanders all across the state more options to get vaccinated to provide the certainty and hope they need.”
