Qld Covid-19 update: State records one new local case of Covid-19

Queensland has recorded one new case of locally acquired Covid-19, linked to two existing cases on Brisbane’s southside. It comes as the number of people in home and hotel quarantine balloons to nearly 9000.

‘Really good news': Queensland records one new COVID-19 case

Queensland has recorded one case of Covid-19 overnight, locally acquired and detected in home quarantine.

It’s a close contact of two cases from the southside Brisbane suburb of Tarragindi.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk described the single case as “great news.”

Chief Health Officer Jeanette Young said the person was well and had been in home quarantine for their entire infectious period.

Dr Young urged Queenslanders to continue with the high rate of testing.

She said the state was in a “good place”, but it was still too early to relax and urged people to continue wearing masks.

“It is really encouraging to see these results,” she said.

There are now more close to 9000 people in quarantine, 5701 at home and 3093 in hotels.

More than 5500 people have been identified as close contacts relating to the Alpha variant outbreak at the Portuguese restaurant and administration centre at the Greek Orthodox Community Centre.

A further 591 were tied to the International airport cluster and 250 to the Virgin flight scare.

There were 134 miners identified as being potentially exposed in the mine outbreak with another 3265 close contacts put into quarantine related to each of those miners

Dr Young said contact tracers were using the state’s Check In app all the time.

She said hotel quarantine had been tight but there had not been an instance where there were no rooms left.

Dr Young was unable to provide an update on how many health staff were now vaccinated.

It comes as the state recorded multiple cases from six separate outbreaks of both the Alpha and Delta variants of Covid-19.

Many of those people are nearing the end of their two-week quarantine period, with health officials hoping their final Covid-19 tests will show the outbreak has been contained.

Queensland recorded one new community case of Covid-19 on Tuesday, and five in hotel quarantine.

The case is in a Kangaroo Point student nurse who is a close contact to a previous Alpha positive case.

Queensland’s update comes as New South Wales residents wake up to news that the Sydney lockdown has been extended.

Stay-at-home orders are now in place until 11.59pm on July 16.
