Queensland has recorded one new case of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. It is linked to the Queensland Corrective Services Academy cluster in the state’s southeast.

Coronavirus: What is this "R-value" I keep seeing?

Queensland has recorded one new case of coronavirus in the past 24 hours as a cluster on Brisbane’s southside grows.

The case is a close contact to the Queensland Corrective Services Academy cluster and was in quarantine.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles said the infected person was only in the community for two days.

“This is really the best we can hope for,” he said.

There are now 27 active cases in Queensland.

The tests undertaken at the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre have so far returned negative results.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said it was very positive news.

More than 6800 tests have been conducted in the past 24 hours.

Ms Palaszczuk said she would not budge on easing Queensland’s border restrictions.

“Queensland will continue to have our borders closed to keep Queenslanders safe,” she said.

“I’m not going to be moved on this.

“The federal government can throw whoever they want at that.”

She said an economy can’t grow without having health under control.

From today, the South Burnett, Southern Downs, Toowoomba and Western Downs local government areas will be restricted to 10 people at homes and in public places. The restrictions do not apply to commercial venues operating with a COVID-safe plan.

Mr Miles said the current restrictions will last another 1-2 incubation periods when they will be reviewed.

He said there was no need to panic buy masks and urged retailers to not price-gouge.

Mr Miles said the “vast bulk” of border exemptions have been approved very quickly but said the Government wanted to do better and authorities were discussing how to do that.

Meanwhile, the Premier has announced more than $11 million to assist tourism operators in Cairns.

This includes $6.5 million for four shovel-ready projects, such as $2 million for Paronella Park.

Yesterday, four new cases were linked to the Queensland Corrective Services Academy, including a child at Fig Tree Pocket Early Childhood Centre and a senior student at Staines Memorial College.

There are 28 active COVID-19 cases across the state and more are expected this week due to the time people spent in the community before testing positive.
