Queensland’s top police officers have sought to clear up mass confusion about  coronavirus social distancing rules after police handed out more than $1.3 million in hefty fines for those flouting the measures - including $40,000 in the past 24 hours.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll and Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski have answered questions submitted by The Courier-Mail readers during a live Q&A on Friday, explaining what's allowed and what's not.

It came as police have handed out almost $40,000 in fines in the last day to people defying public health directions aimed at stopping the spread of COVID-19.

Statistics released daily by police show 29 fines were issued in the 24 hours to 12.01am today, It takes the total number of infringements in Queensland to 993 or about $1.3m in fines.

Officers can issue on the spot fines of $1334 for individuals and $6,672 for corporations which fail to abide by the health directions.

Police also conducted 50 compliance checks on people in quarantine, taking the total to 4170.

In the last 24 hours officers also did 70 compliance checks on non-essential businesses (6132 in total since March 27) and intercepted 1710 vehicles at state borders (89772 total).

Twelve vehicles were turned around at the borders and 39 people were directed to quarantine.At the domestic airport 178 passengers arrived with seven ordered to quarantine. One person was refused entry into Queensland at the airport.
