Police are searching for a woman, 24, who escaped quarantine by breaking through glass door on Gold Coast

A 24-year-old woman is yet to be found by police more than a day after fleeing hotel quarantine, as details of her daring escape are revealed.

A 24-year-old woman is still yet to be found after she allegedly broke out of hotel quarantine on the Gold Coast.

The woman was ordered into 14 days of isolation at the Sofitel at Broadbeach on Monday where she forced her way through glass door to escape the facility.

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson told NCA NewsWire the 24-year-old made the daring getaway on Tuesday night and remained on the run on Wednesday evening amid strict lockdown orders.

“Police are investigating after a 24-year-old woman, who was directed to isolate at a Gold Coast quarantine hotel for 14 days as of August 2, escaped the premises,” they said.

“She does remain outstanding so police are conducting extensive searches to locate her as soon as possible.”

NCA NewsWire understands she is still yet to be found as of early Thursday morning.

The woman was tested for Covid-19 on Tuesday which returned a negative result, while police did not reveal where the woman had travelled to the Gold Coast from.

The daring escape comes as 11 Local Government Areas remain in lockdown amid an escalating Covid-19 outbreak.

Health authorities revealed the Delta cluster had added 16 new infections on Wednesday, which Deputy Premier Steven Miles said had grown to 63 in less than a week.

“This outbreak means this has become our biggest outbreak since the first wave last year,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

Authorities still don’t know how the cluster began. Genomic sequencing has linked the cases to two travellers who returned from overseas on June 29, but how the school student came to contract the virus remains a mystery.

Chief health officer Jeannette Young said it’s possible the virus “could have been someone who got infected at the airport or in hotel quarantine or in the hospital or in the community”.

“And they could be one of the 20 per cent who don’t get symptoms and just because you don’t get symptoms doesn’t mean you can’t pass it on,” Dr Young said.
