A woman has been slapped with a hefty $4000 fine over a bizarre incident in which she allegedly hid in a car boot on top of a tow truck in order to sneak into Queensland.

Police pulled the tow truck over at Goondiwindi on August 18 and searched the vehicle after suspecting someone was trying to move to Queensland.

Inside the car boot were piles of towels and blankets. The woman was discovered at the rear of the boot hidden by the bedding.

“At around 3.40pm, police intercepted the tow truck at the border and directed the male driver to open the boot of a sedan positioned on the tray,” a police statement said.

“A search of the trunk uncovered a 49-year-old woman hiding under blankets and clothing.”

In footage released by the Queensland Police Service, a police officer can be heard directing the driver to get out of the truck after the woman was discovered in the boot.

“It’s towing a number of things that look like it’s furniture, which makes it appear to me that someone’s trying to move to Queensland,” the police officer is heard saying.

“So do you understand that you’re not allowed in Queensland at the moment?”

When the woman said she did not know, the officer replied: “Can I ask you if you didn’t know that, why you were hiding in the boot?”

Police said the woman had been denied entry to Queensland twice previously at the same border crossing.

She was arrested and transported to Boggabilla in New South Wales and fined $4,135 for failing to comply with a border direction.
