Coronavirus Melbourne lockdown: how to be productive working from home
It started on March 28 with the creation of a ‘Bin isolation outing’ page on Facebook. Ten days later the page has more than 330,000 members.
The idea behind the page is basically that, because we are all isolating in our homes to help stop the spread of COVID-19, our bins are going our more than we are “so let’s dress up for the occasion”.
And dress up, people are – and they’re all sharing their hilarious photos and videos on the page.
There are dancing man fairies, Elvis, Spiderman, bogans, an Oompa Loompa, Bollywood dancers, Snow White, dogs pushing bins, nuns, firemen, lots of oversize dinosaurs, bears and chickens, and plenty of men wearing dresses, bikinis and suspenders.
There are also bins being ‘taken out’ on dates, mowing the lawn or on surfboards. In north east Victoria an entire street got involved.
Members are posting from all around Australia and Tasmania, the US, Canada, England, the Netherlands, Hungary, Scotland, Italy and Ireland.
Some people have hinted they are doing fake bin runs just so they can be involved.
One member admits to being under pressure and stressed – “our bins go out on Wednesday night, and I still haven’t decided what to wear!”
Another said her daughters had never taken the bins out but couldn’t wait to be involved – one went fancy, the other went all Harry Potter.
Bin day anticipation proved too much for another member who forgot to put the bins out on her designated day and had to run down her drive in pyjamas as the driver reversed to meet her.
There have also been lamentations from people who don’t actually have a bin; instead they have dumpsters. But it hasn’t stopped them, with one stating he would find a mini bin and post a photo wheeling it to the trash chute.
Basically anything goes with the photos and videos, except for nudity, bullying and trolling.
