Qld Ballet offers free online dance lessons for disabled kids

Disabled and sick children will now have access to online dance classes as part of an initiative between Queensland Ballet and a leading children’s charity. HERE’S HOW TO SIGN YOUR CHILD UP.

JAHZARA Temple would dance “all day, everyday” if she could, and now the ballet enthusiast can through access to online dance classes as part of an initiative between Queensland Ballet and Variety – the Children’s Charity.

The seven-year-old, who has a unique, unknown genetic disease, is among the children who participate regularly in the classes offered via Zoom.

The online sessions are free through Variety – the Children’s Charity’s Kids Corner and were created to keep kids who are sick or have a disability, active and entertained while at home.

Jahzara is the first person in the world with her genetic condition – she cannot feel pain and has limited strength and mobility.

Her mother Carol Temple said the initiative was a brilliant idea, and Jahzara continues to practise her ballet.

“She’ll dance all day, everyday. She dances everywhere,” she said.

Queensland Ballet program manager Martha Godber said the instructors are trained in adapting and tailoring content for each child.

Variety – the Children’s Charity spokeswoman Christine Anderson said the charity believes “all kids deserve a fair go”.

“Our work helps kids who are sick, disadvantaged or have a disability to reach their full potential,” she said.

“Teaming up with Queensland Ballet means that more kids like Jahzara can experience the joy and benefits of dance, not just now, but into the future.”
