SHORNCLIFFE PIER

Soak up the sea air as you tread the boards of this historic pier (the 130-year-old original was replaced in 2016) with its timber railings and quaint street lamps. It’s the largest timber pier in Brisbane and at 351.5m, one of the longest recreational piers in Australia. Afterwards, walk the Bramble Bay foreshore and grab a takeaway fish and chips from The Shelley Inn on Allpass Parade, Shorncliffe. Shorncliffe Pier, Park Parade, Shorncliffe.

MOUNT GLORIOUS

Pull on your hiking boots, pack a water bottle and explore the natural wonderland of Mt Glorious at D’Aguilar National Park, one of north Brisbane’s best bushwalking destinations. Choose from plenty of picturesque trails including The Rainforest Circuit, Cypress Grove and Greene’s Falls, all of which can be accessed from Browns Rd. The nearby Maiala picnic spot and trailhead is closed, but temporary public toilets have been installed alongside Mt Glorious Rd at Maiala. parks.des.qld.gov.au

WYNNUM TO MANLY

All dogs great and small will greet you on this seafront walk on Brisbane’s Bayside that’s about 5km return. It’s a popular dog-walking route, so be sure to bring your furry friend. Start at Wynnum’s Waterloo Esplanade and continue hugging the shoreline, past picnic shelters and Wynnum Wading Pool Park (temporarily closed) before arriving at Manly Boat Harbour and its sea of yachts. Grab a gelato at Lido Italia in Cambridge Parade, Manly’s main street, before the return trip.

WEST END TO SOUTH BANK

Take in the beauty of the Brisbane River with this 50-minute return stroll from Davies Park at West End to QAGOMA (temporarily closed due to COVID-19) at South Bank. Time it right on a Saturday and you can start with a takeaway coffee from the Davies Park Markets, under the fig trees from 6am to 2pm, then follow Riverside Drive until you get to the South Bank Boardwalk and QAGOMA. FORT LYTTON

Guided tours of Brisbane’s primary defence facility from the colonial era until after World War II have been paused due to COVID-10 but you can still explore the site on Sundays from 10am to 4pm, and enjoy a picnic lunch in Fort Lytton National Park, about 14km south of Brisbane’s CBD. The fort was the centre of military activity in Queensland until well into the 20th century and in WWII, it was critical to the defence of the submarine base in the Brisbane River that was home to more than 80 US subs.
