Queensland MP George Christensen has tested positive to Covid-19 and revealed he is taking Ivermectin after getting a GP to prescribe him the controversial anti-parasitic drug before it was “banned” as a treatment for Covid-19 in Australia.
Mr Christensen, in a message to his followers on Telegram, confirmed on Sunday he had tested positive to Covid-19 and expected “haters” to come out of the woodwork hoping “something horrible” would happen to him as a result.
Last year he was criticised by Health Minister Yvette D’Ath, who said his anti-vaccination comments were responsible for low vaccination rates in the region.
He said he had experienced “worse cases of the man flu”.
“You can never be too careful though so I’m taking good ol’ Lemsip, Panadol, aspirin, Betadine anaesthetic lozenges, zinc, vitamin D, vitamin C as well as IVERMECTIN and DOXYCYCLINE,” Mr Christensen said.
The Therapeutics Goods Administration, which assesses the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 treatments, has not approved ivermectin or hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19.
Last year further restrictions were placed on general practitioners to prescribe these treatments.
Mr Christensen said “thankfully” he had been prescribed the ivermectin by a GP before the ban came into play.
“Not that I was to brag about that fact but just explain that I have gotten in lawfully and am using it in a manner prescribed by a physician,” he said.
In February, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners cited a study that found the use of ivermectin to treat patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 did not prevent the onset of severe disease.
The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation strongly advises that the highest priority for providing optimal community-wide protection against COVID-19 is achieving very high vaccination coverage for all eligible Australians.
Medical experts are clear that double or triple vaccination status sharply improves chances of surviving a severe dose of the disease.
