New restrictions for QLD as two new COVID-19 cases recorded

Queensland has moved to reintroduce tough restrictions as the state, and country, faces a new Covid outbreak from the highly-contagious Delta strain.

Queensland recorded three new cases of Covid on Monday, including two locally acquired.

Masks will be mandatory from 1am Tuesday across southeast Queensland local government areas including Noosa, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Logan, Redlands, Moreton, Scenic Rim, Somerset and Lockyer Valley.

Masks will be required when moving about in public.

They are not required when driving alone in cars, when seated eating and drinking or inside homes.

When exercising, if you are outside and by yourself, you do not need to wear a mask but if you are with someone who is not from your household, you need to wear one.

Queensland has also implemented more restrictions including:

- The number of people allowed in a home is reduced to 30 - including visitors, residents and children

- Weddings and funerals will be capped to 100

- A maximum of 20 people will be allowed to dance at weddings

- Restaurants and cafes will return to 1 person per 4sqm and dancing will be banned at venues

- Capacity at sporting events would not change at this stage

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk admitted Queenslanders would be frustrated by the renewed restrictions.

“But this is a world pandemic and anything can happen at any time,” she said.

“We are on the verge.”

She said the next 48 hours would be crucial in Queensland about whether the state would see any spread of the Delta variant.

She said from 1am Tuesday, she wanted Queenslanders to start wearing masks again, particularly in the state’s southeast.

“This really is vital to stop the spread,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“We’re going back now to the restrictions we put in place in January.”

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath warned Queenslanders the Delta variant was highly contagious and could be spread in seconds, urging people to start wearing masks ahead of the mandate and to be vigilant about washing their hands and social distancing.
