Duran Raman in alleged attempt to flee Gold Coast University Hospital

A Covid-positive rideshare driver who was so sick with the virus he was unable to speak before ending up in ICU has been “abusing the nurses all night, calling them c--ts”, and “saying that Covid isn’t real”, sources allege.

An unvaccinated rideshare driver with Covid-19 being investigated for breaching the Queensland-NSW border blockade has allegedly verbally abused nurses and tried to flee hospital quarantine.

It’s also alleged Broadbeach man Duran Raman, 36, has claimed the global coronavirus pandemic is a sham, despite being placed on high-flow oxygen late last week for his illness.

Multiple sources have raised concerns about Mr Raman’s behaviour, which is believed to have resulted in Queensland Police being called to Gold Coast University Hospital over the weekend.

A source said Mr Raman had been “abusing the nurses all night, calling them c--ts, and “saying he doesn’t really have Covid and that Covid isn’t real”.

“He left his room and exposed the whole ward to Covid,” he alleged.

“They had to call police.”

Another source has confirmed Duran had been “abusing” healthcare staff and at one stage he left his negative pressure or isolation room.

It’s also understood Mr Raman fled Robina Hospital when he was initially admitted and his family had to be tracked down via the White Pages phone directory.

Premier Annastacia Palaszcuzk has urged him to stay in hospital.

“He should just sit tight and get better,” she said.

“It is going to be of no help to anyone to have an infectious person running around the Gold Coast.”

Queensland Police said officers were not investigating the incident which they called a “minor disturbance”.

“Around 9am (Sunday) police were called to a health facility due to a minor disturbance,” a spokeswoman said.

“The matter was resolved quickly and without any issue.

“There was no breach of a Public Health Direction detected.

“Hospital security is a matter for Queensland Health.”

Patients are required to stay in the Covid-19 ward for at least 14 days, even if their infectious period has ended.

A statement released by Queensland Health said the incident had caused “no risk to the public or staff”.

“All patients isolating in Covid-19 wards are required to stay in their rooms until they are discharged,” a spokesperson said.

Mr Raman arrived in Queensland from Melbourne on October 10 and is thought to have been infectious several days earlier.

He was located at his Broadbeach unit by police last week after leaving Robina Hospital following a Covid-19 test that later returned positive.

He was taken by ambulance to Gold Coast University Hospital seriously ill and placed on oxygen.

Chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said Mr Raman was ‘so sick’ he could barely breathe and could not tell authorities where he had been.

Police launched an investigation into whether Mr Raman illegally entered Queensland after visiting Covid-ravaged Melbourne and Sydney in the past month.
