COVID-19 vaccine recipients’ call for other Queenslanders to give it a shot

Elderly Queenslanders among the first in Australia to get the COVID-19 vaccine are urging others to follow suit as an additional 166,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine arrived in the country.

Residents of a Bray Park aged care facility were beaming with excitement as vaccinations against COVID-19 began yesterday.

About 90 residents at Anam Cara Aged Care Community will be vaccinated against COVID-19 this week as part of the Australian Government’s 1a phase of the vaccination rollout.

Community Manager Silvia Holl said it was a great privilege to be among the first aged care facilities to offer the Pfizer vaccine in Queensland.

“The residents were really excited about it,” she said.

Resident Stephen Faulkner said that receiving the needle was pain-free, while his fellow resident Michael Johnson said he had not been nervous at all about getting the COVID-19 vaccine.

It comes as an additional 166,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine arrived in Australia yesterday and federal opposition leader Anthony Albanese received the jab.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said of the new doses the federal government would only release 80,000, with the remainder to be held to ensure there is enough for recipients to receive their second jabs.

“We’ll make 80,000 doses available over the coming week, 50,000 to the states, 30,000 to aged care through the Commonwealth,” he said.

“It’s important that we have consistency, we’re always provisioning for the second doses.”

Mr Hunt said he had spoken to the CEO of Pfizer overnight and said the company had provided “good, strong confidence and forward guidance of their continued deliveries”.

“And that just gives Australians confidence in terms of the effectiveness of vaccines and confidence in terms of the reliability of supply.”

Mr Hunt said that the locally-made AstraZeneca vaccination remained “on track” for a March rollout.
