Coronavirus has spread so aggressively in Queensland there are now suburbs where one in nearly 10 residents have been infected, new government data has revealed.

Queensland has recorded more than 350,000 cases of Covid-19 and 131 deaths from the virus since borders opened in mid-December.

Chief health officer Dr John Gerrard on Wednesday said he expected the aggressive Omicron wave to peak within the next seven days in the southeast, with Townsville in the state’s north to feel the full force of the pandemic in about a fortnight.

Analysis of Queensland Health data shows Redbank Plains, Southport North, Coomera and Newstead Bowen Hills remain the suburbs with the highest number of total Covid-19 cases, recorded between 2089 and 1473 cases each since border reopened in mid-December.

But the data, framed against population estimates, has revealed about a dozen suburbs — including some in North Queensland — where Covid-19 has been so rampant one in 10 residents have caught the virus.

This includes Woolloongabba (676 total cases), Fortitude Valley (997 total cases), Port Douglas (565), Mermaid Beach-Broadwater (1368), and Cairns City (1212).

In the Gold Coast suburbs of Miami and Southport North, and the inner-Brisbane suburb of Newstead-Bowen Hills, nine in every 100 residents have tested positive for Covid-19.

Infections on the Gold Coast surged as it reached its peak this week with Labrador, Palm Beach, Mudgeeraba-Bonogin, Nerang, Pacific Pines, Coomera, Helensvale, Oxenford, Upper Coomera, Varsity Lakes, Robina, Southport and Surfers Paradise all recording more than 1000 cases each.

Brisbane suburbs with more than 1000 cases include Inala-Richlands, Coorparoo, Murrumba Downs, and Calamvale-Stretton.

The area with the largest concentration of Covid-19 is the Aboriginal community of Yarrabah, where an estimated 12.4 out of every 100 residents have tested positive.

Populations in rural and regional areas, according to the data, have fared best in terms of the concentration of cases among the community.

Charters Towers, Carpentaria, Mount Morgan, the North and Central Highlands, Monto, Mount Isa, Longreach, and Gin Gin are among the areas where less than one in 100 residents have tested positive for Covid-19.

Queensland recorded 13,551 new Covid-19 cases and nine deaths overnight to Australia Day.

Dr Gerrard said of the nine deaths two were unvaccinated, one had one dose and the rest were double vaccinated. None had a booster.

A total of 15 people were on a ventilator and 47 in intensive care units.
