Brisbane region’s COVID-19 spike after slowing for days

Coronavirus cases have spiked in Brisbane despite the number of infections slowing in recent days. And new Queensland Health infection numbers show there is one area of the city that accounts for more than a quarter of the state’s total of 781.

CORONAVIRUS cases have breached the 200 mark in northern Brisbane after seeming to slow down in recent days.

In figures dated to Tuesday, the Metro North health area has 205 COVID-19 cases after 22 new diagnoses were made in the preceding 24 hours.

The increase was the state’s highest and came a day after the area looked to be slowing.

In the 24 hours to Monday there was only a 1.67 per cent increase in cases, compared to a 12 per cent increase to Tuesday.

As of Wednesday, across Queensland there are now 781 cases, with the regional breakdown figures dating up to Tuesday, when the total was 743.

There was a 6.5 per cent increase in Brisbane South where 11 new cases were diagnosed in the 24 hours to Tuesday, taking the total to 180.

Eleven new cases were identified on the Gold Coast where there are 147 cases.

The Darling Downs now has 31 coronavirus cases after three new diagnoses, a 10.7 per cent increase in a day.

Two cases were identified in Cairns, where there are 36 confirmed cases.

One new case was diagnosed in each of the Sunshine Coast (72 total), Ipswich (36), Townsville (18), Wide Bay (18) and Mackay (six).

Central Queensland had no new cases, with six total diagnoses.

There have been no cases diagnosed in the Central West, South West, North West or Torres Strait and Cape York areas.
