The first Moderna Covid-19 jabs in the country have been administered in Queensland, with nearly 2000 pharmacies kicking off the rollout of the mRNA vaccine.

Queenslanders, including children aged 12 to 15, will be able to access the Moderna jab from 400 pharmacies statewide this week, with the number of stores increasing to 800 from next week.

It comes as Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced four vaccine hubs, all in the greater Brisbane area, will begin accepting walk-ins to get the Covid-19 jab.

The walk-in jab hubs, except the one in Caboolture, will operate seven days a week from 8.30am.

The clinic at Caboolture Square will operate all days except Sunday from 8am.

“This walk-in model is set to make getting vaccinated against COVID-19 even more convenient for our community and we are so excited to be a part of that,” Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said.

A total of 80,000 Moderna jabs have been made available to Queensland pharmacies just this week.

Tara Breusch and Archie Beak, both 12, were the first people to receive the Moderna jab in Queensland, getting their vaccine at the Priceline Pharmacy on George St in the Brisbane CBD.

“This vaccine is important because I want to protect the community and my family… and to my friends and family, I reckon you should all get vaccinated,” Archie said.

The Moderna vaccine, of which Australia has ordered 25 million in total, is remarkably similar to the Pfizer jab, although the two doses are administered four weeks apart instead of three.

Pharmacy Guild of Australia Queensland branch president Chris Owen said there was increasing evidence that younger people were being affected by the Delta strain of Covid-19.

The disease in children is usually mild.

“Regardless of your age, when you arrive at your community pharmacy, your pharmacist will undertake a health assessment and discuss the risks and benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine,” he said.

“Both the patient and vaccinator need be satisfied that the benefits outweigh the risks before any vaccination takes place.”

The latest vaccination data shows 42.3 per cent of Queenslanders aged 16 and older have received both Covid-19 jabs.
