New travel bubble hopes as eager Australians book international cruises

Thousands of Australians are calling for domestic cruising to resume, while others are booking international voyages amid fresh travel bubble hopes.
Forty thousand emails have been sent to MPs calling for the resumption of the local sailings through the Cruise Lines International Association’s (CLIA) Ready! Set! Sail! campaign.
The CLIA wants the federal government to green light a domestic cruise bubble first, which would allow it to run limited itineraries within local waters for Australian passengers only.
It then hopes this could be expanded to include a trans-Tasman bubble.
The Association said similar models are already running in parts of Europe and Asia, and operated under strict health protocols that would also apply here to cruiseliners who are CLIA members.
These include Covid-19 testing of all passengers and crew who must return a negative result before boarding, and others related to crew quarantine, distancing, sanitation and health monitoring.
These protocols were put to the test last week when two guests on-board Royal Caribbean’s Celebrity Millennium ship tested positive to Covid-19.
The two guests, who were vaccinated were sharing a room, were asymptomatic and have been put into isolation.
Royal Caribbean said the infected passengers were being monitored by the company’s medical team, and contract tracing and testing was underway.
The ship was one of the first cruises in North America to restart sailing last week after more than a year.
It comes as the federal government last week hit the Australian industry with another three-month pause.
CLIA Managing Director Australasia Joel Katz said while the move was unsurprising, it had still has not provided a path “towards a careful and responsible resumption of cruising”.
“The cruise industry is not asking for special treatment or to simply reopen the doors to cruising,” Mr Katz said.
“We’ve presented some of the most stringent COVID-19 measures to be found anywhere in tourism, developed with the support of medical experts, and we need governments to take the next steps forward.”
Mr Katz claimed the hiatus was hurting the economy and putting 18,000 jobs at risk.
Helloworld Travel CEO Andrew Burnes said after a domestic restart, the company would like to see cruises in the trans-Tasman bubble, before a South Pacific arrangement is formed with Fiji, the Cook Islands and Vanuatu.
Mr Burnes said this could be achievable in the second half of this year if governments are committed.
Princess Cruises Public Relations Director Meg Koffel said the company would like to see an extension of the trans-Tasman bubble to allow cruise voyages.
Travel agents and cruise operators claimed there has been strong interest in overseas cruises despite the federal government’s international travel ban.
They claimed travellers were still booking trips abroad, with round the world to New Zealand, Antarctic, South Pacific, Europe, Caribbean, and voyages to Asia for 2022 and 2023.
Flight Centre spokesman Haydn Long said cruise operators were offering flexible booking conditions, reduced deposits, inclusions such as on-board credit and shore excursions, reduced pricing for additional passengers, and discounts if paid in full early.
“Cruise sales in general for the first three months of this year exceeded sales for the last five months of last year, so we are seeing continued growth,” he said.
He added that cruise prices may rise due to increased demand once international borders open gain.
The federal budget, released in early May, warned that overseas travel was unlikely to resume until mid 2022.
“Inbound and outbound international travel is expected to remain low through to mid-2022, after which gradual recovery in international tourism is assumed to occur,” the budget papers read.
