PLANS for a controversial hotel tower in Spring Hill have been revised yet again as its developer seeks to quell community outcry against the project.

It comes as it’s revealed that hotel chain Wyndham Gardens will no longer be moving into the 13-storey tower on McConnell St.

However, developer Rupert Yang said discussions were continuing with “one of the largest international hotel companies,” with an announcement due in coming weeks.

“We are now planning for a smaller boutique hotel, designed and built to international standards,” Mr Yang said.

The hotel, first proposed as one long tower, was the subject of outcry by locals over its bulk, scale and proximity to neighbouring historical homes.

The new design would see the development split into two separate towers with the number of hotel rooms reduced from 120 to 108 rooms.

The project was slated to begin in April 2021 and finish in late 2022, pending council approval.

“We have thus spent considerable time with our award-winning architects and consulting engineers to redesign the proposal in such a fashion that directly responds to local residents’ concerns,” Mr Yang said.

“This $18 million mixed-use project will create the equivalent to 100 full time jobs in the building construction industry during construction,” he said.

Mr Yang said that despite the COVID-19 pandemic severely hitting hotel occupancy, he was “optimistic” that Brisbane’s visitor numbers would rebound in years ahead.
