SHE'S been to 20 different cities in the last six months, with friends, and bank accounts, all over the world.

Rather than slog it out on a cross-trainer, Natalie Sisson rows across the English Channel, plays ultimate frisbee in Brazil and cycles from Nairobi to Cape Town, all while being named one of the 30 woman advocates to follow on Twitter.

That's the life she's created as the "Suitcase Entrepreneur" a free-spirited business woman who provides mentoring and training for others to ditch the daily grind and find the freedom of running a business on their terms.

"I sell freedom at work and adventure in life," said Ms Sisson over the phone from her home base in Wellington, New Zealand. "Way too many people work their arses off and forget about having a life."

Ms Sisson started her company after becoming frustrated with her marketing job in London, sick of the commute and lack of freedom to get things done.

"It was the first time I've ever not wanted to go to work in my life," she said.

With eight years' experience in marketing, branding and business development under her belt, she went to Vancouver to play Ultimate Frisbee and ended up founding fundraising app Fund Razr that went on to become one of the most popular on Facebook.

"It was an 18-month roller coaster ride of understanding the world of technology and start-ups," she said.

"I started a blog to talk about my experience and it was quite cathartic. It was a way to interview women in business because I wanted to know how they became successful."

The blog eventually became the basis for Suitcase Entrepreneur, where Ms Sisson earns an income from sponsored podcasts, public speaking and social media coaching in cities all around the world.

"I still live out of a suitcase ... I was just in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and am going to the Philippines," she said, adding that she also has visits to Japan, Sweden, England, Spain, France and the US lined up.

"That was me trying to do less travel this year!"

Ms Sisson is one of a growing breed of "digital nomads" who use technology to run their working life from anywhere in the world.

It's a sector that is expanding as people look to craft their careers around their lifestyle, according to online workplace agency oDesk.

"I really enjoy the constant changes. For me it keeps it fresh, keeps me on my toes and makes you appreciate what you have got. It also keeps your ego in check ... all those cultures and languages, you realise you're just one little tiny thing," she said.

A recent oDesk survey of more than 800 businesses found that 90 per cent of people believe technology is making it easier to do their jobs from anywhere. More than half the respondent said it also boosted their income.

"I think that 10 years from now this absolutely will be the norm," said Jay Shapiro, the CEO of virtual business Infinite Monkeys. "There are so many reasons why being a digital nomad is a great way to work."

Ms Sisson said she hopes more people are able to live her way in the future.

"I would love businesses to get over the fact that you don't need to be present to be adding value ... At any time you can reach out to people and connect."
