Australian medtech firm Medow Health AI secures $3 million for global expansion

A Crohn’s disease patient’s mission to slash medical paperwork has attracted $3 million from Australia’s top specialists for his AI start-up redefining clinical reports to expand globally.

Australian medtech start-up Medow Health AI has raised another $3 million, just months after its first fundraising round, to fund its push into hospitals and overseas markets.

The company, which uses artificial intelligence to automate specialist medical reports, has again been privately backed by senior clinicians including Professor Michael Boyer, CEO of Sydney’s Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, orthopaedic surgeon Dr Michael Solomon, and eye surgeon Dr Johnny Wu.

All three also invested in Medow’s original $2 million raise earlier this year.

Medow was co-founded by Joel Freiberg, who has Crohn’s disease and said long waits to see specialists, combined with watching his father, a respiratory physician, spend hours on paperwork, inspired him to build a tool that cut admin time for doctors.

Mr Freiberg said many early users have become investors.

“We didn’t have to look far for investors for both the initial and second round capital raise with our early medical specialist customers already using the technology wanting to be involved,” Mr Freiberg said.

Mr Freiberg, who founded the company alongside his brother Josh, says the new funding will support product development and expand its integrations with major medical systems alongside its push into new markets.

“The capital raise will enable us to launch new AI products to specialist medical communities across the country, increase integrations into key healthcare systems and see us through to profitability within 12 months,” he said.

Medow claims its revenue has grown 300 per cent since the first raise, with its service now producing more than 100,000 clinical reports a month. It has also completed a pilot at a major Australian hospital.

The service plugs into commonly used practice software including Genie, Gentu and Meditech. Medow says this integration-first approach is aimed at reducing disruption for doctors rather than forcing new workflows.

“Leading in AI quality and interoperability has been a key priority since day one and led to our amazing partnership with Magentus almost 3 years ago,” Mr Freiberg said.

The company has recently expanded into New Zealand and Southeast Asia.

More than 1000 specialists across Australia and New Zealand now use the platform. While the local AI-health sector has become increasingly competitive, Medow is positioning itself as a specialist-focused tool designed to fit into existing clinical systems rather than overhaul them.

Mr Freiberg concluded, “our shared commitment to supporting specialist doctors, enhancing their operational excellence and improving patient outcomes, has the potential to redefine the standard of care across Australia’s medical community.”

“Central to our vision is the creation of a system that genuinely resonates with the specialists who use it.”
