A young Aussie has revealed why she had to move states after being fired from her job.

Anh, 25, was left distraught after she was let go from her dream job working full-time in social media, marketing and content creation in Brisbane.

The young worker described the experience as “super tough”, and said being told she’d lost her job was especially crushing because of how hard it can be to secure a job in the creative industries in the Queensland capital.

“I really enjoyed my job and the people I worked with were amazing. But then our agency lost this major client, which ended up with a bunch of us getting laid off,” Anh told news.com.au.

The young creative said when the company initially lost the client, she figured some of her hours might get cut. But she was stunned when her entire job was put on the chopping block and sliced away.

Although losing her job had nothing to do with her performance, Anh said it was hard not to feel completely deflated by the experience.

“It really got to me when they told us; we were all pretty emotional about it. After graduating in 2021, finding a job in my field took me almost a year, so I was worried about going through that again,” she explained.

Anh said she decided to share her experience of being fired online, because it was still a taboo topic, especially when social media is often a highlight reel of people’s lives.

Often, when people get fired, they don’t openly share that they have lost their jobs, so Anh thought sharing her story might help others.

“After the lay-off, I was feeling pretty low. I turned to TikTok and came across many videos where people shared their experiences, which really helped me feel less alone. It inspired me to share my own story as well,” she said.

After she was told she no longer had a job, Anh was “super stressed” because she knew first-hand how hard it could be to find a creative job in Brisbane - so she started applying for jobs in other states.

She decided to try thinking about the experience in a new way. Instead of focusing on the job loss, she needed to start thinking about how it opened up her future.

“I saw it as a chance for a fresh start. I was turning 25, the job market in Brisbane can be rough for creatives and figured, ‘Why not explore job options in another state?’” she explained.

Ultimately, she was thrilled and relieved to start scoring job offers once she broadened her geographical horizons.

“After the lay-off, I was pleasantly surprised to receive two job offers just three weeks after applying for positions in Sydney and Melbourne,” she said.

“I landed a job in my field as a lead digital content creator and made the move to Melbourne about a month ago. That’s where I am currently living.”

Kate Jolly, head of talent at technology company Employment Hero, said that proactiveness and preparation can make a key difference in how quickly you land your next role after being laid off or made redundant.

“Start by refining your resume with clear, impactful descriptions of your skills and experiences, ensuring it’s tailored to the job you’re applying for. During interviews, practice responding to common questions to highlight your strengths, adaptability, and problem-solving skills,” she said.

Ms Jolly said researching potential employers and understanding their business and values can also set you apart while job hunting.

“Remember also that every interaction is an opportunity to demonstrate your value and fit for the role. These days, many job opportunities are not advertised, so networking and leveraging your connections, either in-person or via social media, can be very beneficial,” she said.
