A Queensland busker has revealed the huge amount of money she made in just a single night after quitting her 9-5 job.

Musician Jasmine Rain was recently stopped on the streets of Surfers Paradise in the Gold Coast by job app Getahead, which works like Tinder by allowing people to swipe through potential employers.

Ms Rain revealed she has been busking full time for about 12 months after deciding to leave her previous job.

She also does gigs and performs at wedding but said busking is the main way she makes a living.

“I made $1400 in one night,” she said, after being asked about the best night she has had since she started busking.

Asked about what it was like to quit her job in pursuit of chasing her dream as a musician, Ms Rain said it “felt like jumping into cold water”.

“But it very quickly made me realise how much the 9-5 was actually killing me,” she said.

While she loves her work now, it doesn’t come without its challenges, with Ms Rain revealing she has to deal with constant unwanted attention from men on the street.

“A lot of sexual harassment. A lot of old, entitled men,” she said.

However, she said she still feels safe given she works in a public space with a lot of people around, noting that she also live streams on social media while busking.

Council backflips on busking changes

There was some controversy in Sydney recently when the City of Sydney Council was forced to walk back controversial changes to busking rules after the move caused “confusion and frustration” among performers.

Updates to the Sydney busking code announced in late October meant musicians were restricted to certain areas of the city to perform, including George St between Circular Quay and Haymarket, with the exception of six spots.

Previously, buskers were permitted to play anywhere in the city, as long as it was safe to do so.

The new rules also placed a time limit for buskers, who are allowed to play for one hour per day on a first-in basis.

The changes were slammed by buskers across the city, who labelled it “disappointing”.

However, in a post on Instagram, Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore confirmed she would move to review the controversial busking policy and code.

“Over the last couple of weeks I’ve heard all of the feedback from buskers and their supporters in response to the City’s August 25 updates to our busking policy and code,” she said.

“Unfortunately, communication with the busking community was not as clear as it should have been, which understandably led to confusion and frustration. Just four buskers provided feedback.”

The review will include increasing the number of busking locations in George St and “enabling low impact buskers to perform for longer than one hour at suitable George Street locations”.

As part of the review, the Sydney council will also consult Transdev, who operates the light rail on George St, to discuss safety implications for proposed changes.
