TFE Hotels will open its Adina Apartment Hotel Brisbane in the heart of the CBD early next year after an extensive renovation aimed at preserving its Art Deco character.

The heritage building at 171 George St, on the corner of the Queen Street Mall, will feature 220 apartments, a signature restaurant and a bar in the vast ground-floor lobby space.

TFE Hotels chief executive Rachel Argaman said the hotel was strategically placed, given that Brisbane had $6 billion worth of tourism projects in the pipeline and an expected surge in visitors because of the Queen’s Wharf Casino and other projects.

“The hotel will offer guests an enticing blend of history, grandeur, great dining and convenient living close to some of the city’s biggest attractions, as Brisbane continues to rapidly expand and develop,” she said.

TKD Architects have preserved the Art Deco style of the sandstone-clad building, which was initially built for the Queensland Government Savings Bank. Construction began in 1913 but slowed during WWI, finally reaching completion nine years later in 1922.

From 1925 until 1942, the building’s top floor housed Queensland’s first official radio station, 4QG, and for 70 years it housed various government departments, before finally being sold as part of the casino development across the road and turned into offices.

Ms Argaman said the design team had maintained the integrity of the building through a respectful restoration process.

She said the hotel would open in February next year, and from the moment guests stepped inside they would be struck by the impressive double-height decorative ceilings with ornate ceiling roses and the original timber panelled walls.

“Adina Apartment Hotel Brisbane will be an attraction in its own right as the city’s most exciting new hotel with a history,” she said.

“The moment people walk into the foyer, they will fall for its charm and from there, they will have so many moments to explore its history, right into the heart of the city.”

TFE Hotels was established in 2013 as a joint venture between Australia’s Toga Group and Singapore’s Far East Hospitality Holdings.
