At 7am AEST Friday, ASX futures were down 0.4%, pointing to a soft start to the day.
Wall Street was out for Thanksgiving, so global price action was driven by Europe. Here’s what happened overnight...
Europe steadies
With US traders swapping terminals for turkey, Europe had the stage and delivered a performance best described as 'professionally undecided'.
London closed flat as investors continued digesting the UK government’s tax-raising budget - a fiscal package designed to soothe bond vigilantes.
UK gilts held steady, and the pound nudged higher.
Paris also closed flattish, Frankfurt edged higher by 0.18%, but the wider European tone was neatly captured by Joshua Mahony at Scope Markets: “European markets are showing a distinct lack of direction”.

Rate-cut expectations are back in vogue, with markets now pricing an aggressive chance of a December Fed cut after a string of softer US data.
This has flipped the script on early-November nerves around stretched tech valuations, and reintroduced what strategists love to call “constructive risk appetite”.
Meanwhile, oil crept higher as talk of Ukraine peace progress collided with OPEC+ positioning ahead of their weekend meeting.
And gold has cooled slightly after its recent surge.
Bitcoin flexes
Bitcoin climbed above US$91,000, reclaiming ground after last week’s wobble.
Only days ago it was licking its wounds near US$80,000 amid broader equity jitters.
When rate cuts look inevitable, assets like Bitcoin don’t wait for confirmation, they front-run the euphoria.
