THERE'S being provocative and then there's putting a vagina on your shirt.
Popular clothing chain American Apparel is selling a casual unisex T-shirt featuring a menstruating vagina in its Australian and international online stores.
The chain's Australian website said the controversial tee was "low in stock" in small and extra small sizes and sold out in larger fits.
News.com.au left a message with American Apparel Australia but was awaiting comment.
The T-shirt is produced by The Ardorous, an all-female art brand run by Canadian artist Petra Collins, who is a photographer and American Apparel retail employee.
Ms Collins has an interest in "exploring female sexuality and teen girl culture", the shop said.
In an interview with VICE she said she had "trolled the mainstream media" with the shirt and mocked how some outlets could not say the word "vagina".
The chain is famous for its provocative and sexually-charged advertising which often features women in a state of undress.
A series of American Apparel bodysuit advertisements were banned by the United Kingdom's Advertising Standards Authority for "overtly sexual" images which "demeaned women by emphasising the model's groin, buttocks and breasts".
Half the money from the T-shirt's sale is distributed to the artist and American Apparel takes the other 50 per cent.
It is the second vagina-related controversy of late.
In August a group of feminist Sydney University students placed 18 vaginas on the front cover of student magazine Honi Soit.
