CONSTRUCTION has officially started on was is believed to be Australia’s tallest student accommodation towers in the Brisbane CBD.
The $120 million 753-bed, 41-storey Student One tower at 38 Wharf St is scheduled to be completed in December, 2017.
It will sit adjacent to Student One’s first student accommodation project, the $110 million 18-storey tower in the former Boeing building in Adelaide St which is scheduled to open in July next year.
The two projects, which will add about 1500 beds to the City’s student housing sector, are both being constructed by Hutchinson Builders.
Student One chief executive Tim Weston said Arkhefield has designed the Wharf St tower which when finished will be one of the tallest student residencies in the world.
“The commencement of construction on Student One on Wharf St marks the beginning of a new age in premium, affordable student living for Brisbane,” he said.
“It will be our first opportunity to work with a fresh canvass, unrestricted in our thinking, to create the perfect student living environment that fosters a true sense of community among our residents.
“Our students will have free, unrestricted access to the latest wired and Wi-Fi technology, rooftop gardens and BBQ areas, communal living spaces and kitchens, group and individual study areas, music rooms, games rooms, an outdoor cinema, gymnasium and swimming pool.”
Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the 753 bed project would cater to domestic students as well as the 75,000 international students in Brisbane.
“International education is Brisbane’s largest export, worth $3.77 billion to the city each year ... but until now we have had a shortage of quality, purpose-built accommodation facilities,” he said.
“This purpose-built student accommodation is at an ideal inner city site, in proximity to major public transport interchanges such as Central Station and the King George Square Bus Station and within a few kilometres of major universities and education precincts.”
Student One on Wharf Street will have a range of fully air-conditioned studios, as well as four and five-bedroom share apartments.
It also features 168sq m of prime ground floor retail space, recreational areas and a learning centre, as well as 140 bicycle spaces.
