The builder of a $400m hotel and residential tower at The Star Gold Coast is assessing what could be tens of millions of dollars in damage after a major water leak flooded up to 40 floors of the development early Saturday morning.
In videos posted to social media, torrents of water were captured cascading down the stairs of the construction site, which was due for completion “early in 2025.”
In one video, posted to TikTok by Emerson McLeod, a torrent of knee-deep water can be seen pouring down a fire escape through the centre of the building.
Up to 47 floors are thought to have been affected, with some commenters saying they were buyers in the project who had expected to be given the keys as early as next week.
The flood coursed through tower two of the Broadbeach Island development, which is being developed by the Destination Gold Coast Consortium (DGCC) - a partnership between The Star Entertainment Group and its Hong Kong partners Chow Tai Fook and Far East Consortium.
“We are awaiting further advice as to the cause and implications from the builder,” a statement from DGCC said.
“DGCC does not have a confirmed assessment of the damage, but we are of the view that this will affect the timing of settlement of some apartments.”
The $400m, 65-floor tower has 457 new residential apartments as well as a 219-room, five-star Andaz hotel. It was under construction by Mulitplex and was due to open “early in 2025”.
“A short but significant water event occurred during construction at DGC Tower 2 on Friday which has been contained,”a spokeswoman for Multiplex said.
“Rectification work is already underway.”
The flood is another potential disaster for The Star, which is grappling with a series of complex financial deals in a bid to save it from administration.
Tower two is itself part of the rescue plan, with Star investors Far East Consortium and Chow Tai Fook to provide $8m of a $53m cash payment upon practical completion of the project, or by November – whichever came first.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said a fire crew was called to an alarm activation incident at 1.30am on Saturday.
The spokeswoman said the crew was on scene for half an hour to help contain the flooding.
