A Queensland man had his world come crashing down twice within the space of one day.
Family man Dale Liston was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease on Wednesday and was in hospital recovering when he read on Facebook about the Oracle builder collapse.
The Queensland building giant fell into liquidation, leaving hundreds of Queensland homes unfinished and subcontractors and suppliers owed millions of dollars.
But Mr Liston didn’t just have his dream home plans crushed.
“I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease,” Mr Liston said.
“I ended up having to have a procedure and had my entire life turned upside down, and then again the next day”.
Mr Liston said his kids keep asking when they will be able to move into their new rooms but his Oracle home in Logan is still yet to be completed.
“I started the build in June last year,” he said.
“I’ve had to renew my lease about three times now since the building, because the finish date just keeps getting longer and longer.
“It was meant to be done in May this year”.
Mr Liston said Oracle kept blaming the delays on Covid and asked for an additional 40K at the start of the year.
“I ended up negotiating with him from 40K to 20K,” he said.
“But I stipulated in the agreement that he would only get those funds if the house was complete”.
Despite everything, Mr Liston said he counts himself lucky he didn’t lose the additional payment.
“There’s other people that did pay the increases and they’ll never see that money again, some people have gone out and gotten loans and it’s their life savings.
“It takes a long time to save up that kind of money, it’s not something that’s readily
available to everyone.”
