Domino’s hiring more than 7000 workers across the country, ahead of Christmas rush

Domino’s has launched a hiring spree to fill more than 7000 roles across Australia as it flags expansion plans. See where the jobs are and how you can earn six-figures.

'Real huge demand' expected when international travel resumes

Exclusive: One of Australia’s largest fast food giants is going on a recruitment drive, announcing it will hire more than 7000 people — and there is a potential to earn a six-figure salary.

With a workforce of more than 19,000 people already, pizza chain Domino’s said it will be offering thousands of full-time, part-time and casual roles to fill its 720 stores across the country.

More than 2400 jobs are up for grabs in NSW, another 2000-plus in Queensland and more than 1200 in Victoria.

Roles include delivery drivers, pizza makers and store managers.

Domino’s ANZ chief executive officer David Burness said they were in a position to hire after seeing a growth in home deliveries.

He is also on a mission to open more stores nationally and relaunch their online ordering platform with a new GPS tracker.

“We are having to find staff especially in states coming out of lockdown and people are out and about socialising and stuff, we need staff to service that,” he said.

“As there is pressure on finding staff, there’s always a combination of what people look for out of a job.

“Staff are looking for good wages, but they’re also looking for a place that’s fun. One thing we try to do to make the job fun at Domino’s is 'gamify' everything, including holding pizza competitions.

“Our culture is very different to many businesses. It’s almost like a sporting club, in that we are passionate about that sense of competition and team work in store.”

A former Queensland delivery driver himself, Mr Burness – who was appointed to the top job in September – said over the next year they will be rolling out a program focused on developing further training opportunities for staff.

And with four of his children employed at Domino’s stores, Mr Burness said working in the business can lead to a six-figure income.

“I started at Domino’s while at university and never expected that I would still be here 30 years later as the boss,” he said.

“Even our global CEO started as a delivery driver in Brisbane while at university.

“We think having people in the head office who started out in stores, whether it be a delivery driver or mopping the floors, you know the business from the ground up and you’re going to be a lot more effective when working in the business.”

Domino’s shares have more than doubled over the past year as the company benefited from growth demand for home delivery during the pandemic.

Its shares were trading one per cent higher at $126.59 on Monday afternoon.

One of the 7200 lucky applicants will also go into the draw to win a year’s worth of free pizza and a Nintendo Switch.

Mr Burness said Domino’s continues to pay penalty rates for late nights, weekends and public holidays, as per the Fast Food Industry Modern Award.

This includes delivery drivers who are hired as employees, not contractors, with the same entitlements as other team members.

“We are entering into the age of delivery in the next decade and there are so many things you can get delivered in the food business,” he said.

“What we are going to have to do is make sure we are an employer of choice, it is interesting and continues to be the place people go to for a job, from metro cities to regional towns.”
