THE team that brought Mighty Mighty Cue & Brew to Fortitude Valley will bring their American revolution to one of the CBD’s most recognisable buildings.
On Sunday the Belgian Beer Cafe which has been in the heritage-listed building on the corner of Mary and Edward street for more than a decade will close its doors.
And the Buffalo Bar — showcasing American food and drink — will open its doors in the building next month.
Mighty Mighty co-owner Simon O’Brien said the success of the venture on Mclachlan St sparked the expansion.
“Expansion was always a projection and we’re thrilled to have been entrusted with this iconic
building to launch Buffalo Bar — a place unseen before in this state, in this country,” he said.
“The building has been maintained immaculately and captures the essence of American spirit in its charismatic Australian surrounds.”
The three-level building is jointly owned by Colebourne Investments and Meo Pty Ltd which is owned by Michael O’Brien who operated the Belgian Beer Cafe on the ground floor.
Buffalo Bar will have a sit-down dining hall serving varied American fare across lunch and dinner.
There will be a craft beer and whiskey lounge with a rockabilly atmosphere and a separate bar menu will feature 18 namesake signature buffalo wings. In the beer garden there will be a craft beer lounge which will boast an extensive US craft beer list and extended selection of whiskeys, wine and speciality cocktails.
JLL Hotels & Hospitality Group‘s Paul Fraser, who struck the deal, said there were a number of other high profile operators interested in the 1890s former Coal Board building when the leasehold was put to market.
“It’s a heritage-listed building and beautiful inside and out,” he said.
“It also has a beer garden which is very rare in the Brisbane CBD.”
The Buffalo bar has a 10-year lease on the property and industry sources told Prime Site they will be paying between $350,000 to $400,000 a year.
Michael O’Brien said Buffalo Bar was the standout proposal.
“I have no doubt it will be an outstanding success,” he said.
“With an iconic building that is steeped in tradition and prestige, and a new concept not yet seen in the CBD, I’m confident we’re going to see this become one of the city’s must-experience
venues.”
