The multimillion dollar restoration of a Brisbane landmark is nearing completion, with the historic Naldham House set to open next month.

The opening of the 140-year-old heritage listed Mary St building – which was built in the revival classical style – marks the completion of the first element of the $2.5bn Waterfront Brisbane development in the Brisbane CBD.

The building has been unoccupied since the Brisbane Polo Club closed almost a decade ago.

Naldham House is set to become Brisbane’s hottest new food and beverage destination, with all three floors managed by hospitality industry leaders, DAP & Co.

Dexus’s Waterfront Brisbane project director Matt Beasley said the completion of Naldham House was a significant milestone in the transformation of the Waterfront Brisbane precinct.

“This is an exciting part of the project, where the public can start to see the precinct come to life as the doors open to the restored Naldham House,” he said.

“We’ve worked closely to repair heritage features of this Brisbane icon, while also delivering new foundations and structural work. The project has also allowed for a built-out deck allowing the Brisbane icon to take advantage of the waterfront.”

The impacts of 2022 Brisbane flood required extensive work in the basement and efforts from painters, plasters and joiners to repair and recreate heritage elements.

The Naldham House site was acquired by the Australasia Steam Navigation Company in 1852 and a two-storey office erected in 1864, with various extensions and renovations carried out during the 1870s and 1880s contributing to the building’s current form.

ASN Co was merged into the Australasian United Steam Navigation Company in the mid-1880s, with the building continuing to play an important role within Brisbane’s maritime industry.

Later owners include the members only Brisbane Polo Club between 1994 and 2015. Current co-owners Dexus and Dexus Wholesale Property Fund purchased Naldham House in 2015.

DAP & Co are the creators of some of Brisbane’s best venues including Walter’s Steakhouse and The Gresham Bar in the CBD, and Southbank restaurant Popolo.

DAP & Co co-owner Andrew Baturo said they have “poured our hearts” into creating something special.

“We want Naldham House to be a celebration of our city’s heritage and rich culture for years to come,” he said.
