The historic Jubilee Hotel will open its doors in August promising to be “the jewel” of a new high-rise office tower development with its future secure for the next 100 years.

The 14-level $200m plus cantilevered office tower developed by JGL properties and built on the Jubilee Hotel’s former car park will open by the end of March, and is next to the 134-year-old heritage-listed Bowen Hills pub.

BlightRayner Architecture director Jayson Blight said the tower has allowed the revitalisation of the two-storey hotel by creating a 250sq m 19m high publicly accessible plaza directly adjacent to St Paul’s Tce and a connection to the back of the pub.

He said new features will include a 300-seat beer garden at the rear and the removal of “all the rambling stuff”.

“This was an opportunity to bring the old and the new together as one,” Mr Blight said.

“The Jubilee Hotel will be front and centre. It’s the jewel of the development so we wanted to give it a new lease of life for another 100 years.”

Builders Rohrig are reshaping the hotel where non-heritage listed and redundant structures will removed to accentuate the pub’s classic architectural features.

Mr Blight said the old hotel was “quite rambling” with small rooms and dark nooks and crannies.

“We’re pulling all that rambling stuff out and will open up the back of the pub. The old toilet block will be removed as well as the old canopy,” he said.

“We are bringing back a larger higher canopy over a new beer garden that can cater up to 300 people and we’re putting in a new bar.

“The old journos bar has been cleaned up and is now a dining area with a fire place and a little storeroom has been converted into a cellar while we’re bringing back the French doors to open up onto the veranda at the lower level.

“It’s really all about celebrating the back of the building.”

Mr Blight said they were preserving as many of the rear veranda posts as possible while the hotel’s paint work will be scrapped back to reveal the original red brick and slate stone.

“We’ve aimed to bring back to life the majesty of what that building was and reinforce the heritage that Brisbane has and celebrate it,” he said.
