From independent living to NDIS accommodation, Mitchelton development will cater to every lifestyle

IF a new northside twin-tower development is approved it will be Brisbane’s first purpose-built disability accommodation under the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

A PROPOSED northside development promises to be a community precinct, catering for all ages – from toddlers to retirees as well as the disabled.

High-end residential developer Traders In Purple has submitted an application to the Brisbane City Council for a $125 million two-building mixed use project at 1A Northmore St, Mitchelton, near the Brookside Shopping Centre.

One nine-level building will have 103 owner-occupier apartments, with the majority being large two and three-bedroom units.

Traders In Purple general manager Brett Robinson said he wanted to deliver a project that offered a genuine community benefit.

“We’ve done a lot of research and work to determine what the Mitchelton area really needs from this project,” he said.

“This is not one of those cookie cutter designed apartments buildings ... we hope it will become a precinct.”

Designed by Brisbane architects, Arkhefield, one nine-level building will have 103 owner-occupier apartments, with the majority being large two and three-bedroom units.

Partnering with Life Without Barriers, 18 per cent of the apartments have been designed to meet a platinum level standard. If approved, it will be the first in Brisbane to be purpose-built for specialist disability accommodation under the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

The other nine-level tower will have 100 retirement apartments comprising 50 independent living apartments and 50 assisted living apartments. The assisted living apartments will have additional services such as meals, cleaning and other selected home care services.

On the ground floors there are plans for a 70-place childcare centre and a specialised disability respite care centre.

Unrelated to Traders in Purple, Japara Healthcare is also proposing a new purpose built, 106 bed residential care facility next door.

Mr Robinson said the provision of aged care, retirement apartments, specialised community services and owner-occupier apartments within one precinct would significantly expand the services available to downsizers in the local area and wider community.

“But I’m most excited that we’ve been able to include specialist disability accommodation in our project,” he said.

“Being able to live an independent life is something many of us take for granted.

“For the people who will one day live in these apartments, having their own place designed specifically to their individual requirements could be truly life altering.”
