THE Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) has kickstarted the $350m second stage of its industrial park as unprecedented demand puts the squeeze on suitable land.

BAC will start civil works for a 26.5ha Stage 2 of its Airport Industrial Park which spans more than 100ha.

BAC executive general manager commercial Martin Ryan said the rise of e-commerce and logistics businesses through the pandemic, as well as existing tenants increasing their warehousing and office sites at Brisbane Airport, has combined to put the current available industrial precincts near capacity

“Businesses increasingly want premium, high-amenity sites that have been developed with sustainability top of mind, which also allow 24/7 operational capacity.” he said.

“We pretty much have zero per cent vacancy at the Airport Industrial Park. We’ve never had a situation before where we’re running out of prepared land so we are trying to bring Stage 2 on as quickly as possible.

“We’re also looking at the balance of the rest of the industrial park including Stage 3 and we’ll keep on rolling through.”

During the construction phase of Stage 2 more than 440 jobs will be created and when completed it will house over 1400 workers and create thousands of indirect jobs.

Brisbane Airport is currently home to more than 425 businesses, where more than 24,000 people are employed, growing to 60,000 in 2050.

Businesses include Direct Couriers, which recently doubled its warehousing capacity at Brisbane Airport, Miele Australia, Downer, DHL, Australia Post, and The Pool Tile Company.

BAC is also set to deliver a $72m Queensland Regional Aeromedical Base, scheduled for completion in 2024.

Mr Ryan said the flexibility of around-the-clock operations was critical to strength and ongoing operations of hundreds of businesses and employees at Brisbane Airport.

“Our unparalleled transport links and development flexibility makes operations more efficient and productive for our tenants. We look forward to welcoming a new range of businesses to the precinct when the second stage of Airport Industrial Park is developed.”
