QUEENSLAND’S push to become a global hydrogen powerhouse has been boosted with a pair of new projects set for Brisbane and central Queensland.

The Morrison Government has invested nearly $1 million in a $3.1 million pilot project by BOC to produce hydrogen from renewable energy in Brisbane. And the Palaszczuk Government has started a $5 million study into a hydrogen plant at Stanwell Power Station in central Queensland.

Federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor said the Brisbane pilot project would produce up to 2400kg of renewable hydrogen a month by electrolysis at BOC’s Bulwer Island gas facility. He said the development of a world-leading hydrogen industry was a significant economic opportunity for Australia as key export markets such as Japan and Korea shifted their energy mix to hydrogen.

“The Government has already invested more than $100 million in hydrogen projects, partnering with industry to develop tangible solutions that are important for bringing down energy prices while keeping the lights on for Australian households and small businesses,” he said.

Queensland Energy Minister Anthony Lynham said a 12-month study would assess the technical, commercial and strategic feasibility of a large hydrogen electrolysis plant near Rockhampton.

“By deploying hydrogen electrolysis at large scale, the demonstration plant could help drive down production costs and support the development of new domestic and export markets for hydrogen,” Dr Lynham said.

State Development Minister Cameron Dick said the government was working with industry, universities and research institutes to develop a clean hydrogen industry.

“Our government is working hard to drive this industry forward to create more local jobs and a stronger state economy,” he said.
