A southeast Queensland pub is seeking to employ more than 100 new staff as it wraps up a $3m renovation in time to open its doors by the end of the month.

The Mon Komo Hotel on the Redcliffe Peninsula, was bought by the Lewis Land Group last September and soon after closed its doors for a “refresh”.

With a soft opening by the end of February and full trading by the middle to late March the 10-year-old pub is on a recruitment drive.

Lewis Leisure Queensland regional manager Chris Allison said “the net has been thrown wide”.

“Certain positions are attracting a high volume of applications and there are others which are a little bit more thin on the ground including kitchen staff and some of the management roles,” he said.

“But we’re going quite well. We’re not only setting up Mon Komo we also own The Belvedere nearby which employs 115 to 120 staff and we need to add to those numbers after having a great summer.”

The combination of both hotel staff will make Lewis Leisure, a subsidiary of the Lewis Land Group, the second largest employer on the peninsula behind the Redcliffe Hospital, and the largest private employer.

The positions Mon Komo Hotel is seeking to fill are 20 kitchen staff, five in management, five in administration and 70 wait/bar staff.

Mr Allison said he was unaware whether lucrative JobSeeker and JobKeeper payments had any impact on application numbers.

“We’ve been interviewing non stop for the past few days and we’ll keep on going,” he said.

“I only know from the applications that I’m receiving there has been a been a bit of a dearth of chefs which was the situation before COVID. It can be difficult to get the right people in any environment.”

Mon Komo Hotel has multiple bars, dining options, conference, meeting and wedding facilities and the “refresh” will include a new dining concept with a charcoal rotisserie.

The design will also tie the inside with the outside of the venue and include a new outdoor dining area.

Mr Allison said the new look Mon Komo Hotel aimed to have a wide appeal.

“Our hotels are usually diverse with a wide range of options that appeal to a broad cross section,” he said.

“We like to think we’ve created a place in the community where you can bring your kids, grandma and grandfather, your friends young or old.

“With great food and a cold beer the basics of hospitality hasn’t changed for us.”
