A private family of Melbourne financiers have listed a rare freehold Queensland island with private beach and uninhabitable beach shack for $15m.

Timana Island, about two hours south of Cairns in Queensland, is for sale for $15m.

A private family of Melbourne financiers have listed a rare freehold Queensland island, Timana, which lies between Dunk and Bedarra Islands with an asking price of around $15m.

The rainforested Timana Island, which sports a private beach and a 1990s built beach shack lies off Mission Beach, about two hours south of Cairns in Far North Queensland.

Also known as Thorpe Island, Timana lies in the Coral Sea adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef, and is one of few Australian islands which are private freehold.

It is being offered for sale by Melbourne-based company St Columb. Public records show St Columb is controlled by Martin and Duncan Veall. They declined to comment.

Marketing agent Steve Wiltshire of Mission Beach Real Estate said at just over 15 hectares, Timana Island is covered with coconut palms, native hibiscus and coral flame trees, however the beach shack is uninhabitable. The island is being offered via private treaty sale.

Meanwhile at the more upmarket Hayman Island, expressions of interest closed last Friday, on Hayman House.

Hayman House is held by one of Australia’s richest families.

It is one of two private residences on the island, which also sports the InterContinetal Hayman Island Resort, and is held by the Peabody family - one of Australia’s richest families known for their interest in a variety of industries including waste management and New Zealand’s wine industry.

Marketing agent Jock Langley of Melbourne agency Abercrombys would not comment on Hayman House’s vendor but said the marketing campaign had attracted interest from

local, national and global players.

Designed by the late award winning architect Kerry Hill, and constructed of reinforced concrete and glass, timber battening the house has views of the Coral Sea islands. The double volume screened atrium extends the living space of the home to the horizon, according to the marketing campaign. The house features three pavilions across 1,100sqm of development.

“We are in the process of conducting the expressions of interest campaign and we have had a lot of interest,” Mr Langley told The Australian.

“It has drawn interest from all over the globe as well as local and national interest, and we are very satisfied.

“Time will tell if we can get to a meeting of minds as far as buyer and seller.”
