Top tips for 'achieving business growth' revealed by industry leaders

A Mexican fast food chain that has grown the number of its stores across Australia by more than a third during the coronavirus pandemic is seeking more than 1600 workers in Queensland in anticipation of their busiest ever holidays seasons.

Guzman y Gomez is seeking full time, part-time and casual roles from cooks to sales and food service, baristas, team leaders, and restaurant managers for its 51 Queensland restaurants.

Chief executive Steven Marks said the Christmas period was always one of the busiest times of the year.

“With lockdowns finally almost over and state borders slowly opening back up, we know this year is going to be one of the biggest holiday seasons for us yet,” he said.

“We’re hiring for over 4200 roles across the country — and 1648 in Queensland alone — and we’re opening four new restaurants before the end of the year too.”

In Queensland GYG will open restaurants in Hervey Bay and Virginia in Brisbane’s northern suburbs before Christmas. It will also open two restaurants in Victoria.

The $500m plus company was founded in Sydney in 2006 by Mr Marks and Robert Hazan and has grown to about 140 stores in Australia plus more overseas.

Mr Marks said it was the biggest recruitment drive they have ever carried out.

“GYG has experienced unprecedented growth in the last two years,” he said.

“We took a really aggressive approach during Covid, rather than holding back on our growth plans. We also didn’t stop opening new restaurants – in 2020 we’ve opened 20 new restaurants and we’re opening a further 30 this year.

“The biggest challenge we face right now, along with the entire restaurant industry in Australia, is filling roles in our existing corporate and franchised restaurants as well as hiring for the 30 new restaurants we are opening in 2022.”

In Queensland CYG is seeking 1648 new staff, in NSW 1247, Victoria 702, Western Australia 564, the ACT 60 and the Northern Territory 25.

Mr Marks said expanding internationally was also a big part of GYG’s growth plan.

“At the moment we’re focusing on opening more restaurants in Australia, and after that we plan on focusing on expanding further in the US where we know there is more familiarity with Mexican cuisine, and also massive market opportunity for fast food that is clean, fresh and actually good for you,” he said.
