Court approves three 15-storey tower Kangaroo Point project and work could start in June

A massive highrise development in the Brisbane suburb of Kangaroo Point will go ahead despite protests from angry locals.

A controversial $350 million luxury riverfront development at Kangaroo Point has been given the green light and work could start as early as June.

Developer, Pikos Property Group on Friday said the Queensland Planning and Environment Court had issued an approval for it to build three, 15-storey towers at 108 Lambert St, Kangaroo Point.

However, a number of refinements had to be made to the original proposal for the 5284sq m site including reducing the number of apartments from 300 to 278.

The go-ahead for the Lambert Street development followed Pikos Property Group lodging an appeal with the court after Brisbane City Council rejected its application to increase the heights of the towers from 10 storeys to 15 storeys because they did not meet with community wishes.

The Pikos Property Group argued it met the current Neighbourhood Plan.

The development also sparked a street blockade and a protest in Council chambers.

Pikos Property Group head Pedro Pikos said on Friday it had not shied away from scrutiny, engaging with council, or addressing issues raised within the community throughout the lengthy process resulting in a successful outcome for all stakeholders.

“We’re aware of the views raised by some local residents and we want to reassure the community that we’ve listened, and we’re invested in the future of Kangaroo Point,” he said.

“Now we are out of the appeal process, we continue to take on board community feedback and are exploring further options to substantially reduce apartment density and traffic volumes.

“This project will be the new benchmark for apartment living in terms of spaciousness and amenity on the Kangaroo Point peninsula, where our density is far less than in many existing residential towers in the area.”

Mr Pikos said development precedents for the area had been set long ago and his group’s proposal sat within the existing town planning parameters.

“We’ve gone back to the drawing board to ensure we continue to deliver a new standard of luxury residential tower development to the area in a well-designed integrated project that blends with and is sensitive to its surrounds,” he said.

“The Pikos team is now gearing up to deliver the project and we expect work to commence as early as next month,” Mr Pikos said.
