According to online tracker Flightaware, the Boeing 737-800 instead landed in Karratha, about 800km to the west, where it remained for about 40 minutes.

The plane recommenced its journey on to Broome International Airport about 1.20pm AWST, landing shortly after 2pm and without issue.

It is understood the aircraft was diverted after the pilots received notification of a potential minor mechanical issue.

Passengers were not required to disembark at Karratha and the pilots did not request an emergency landing.
