Australians could get free flights for a year with Qantas upping the stakes on its latest frequent flyer rewards program promotion.
The new deal between Qantas Frequent Flyer (QFF) and Everyday Rewards (ER) will see Australians go into a draw to win 50 million Qantas Points – the biggest ever points giveaway in the history of its frequent flyer program.
Fifty lucky Australians who shop at Woolworths, Big W or BWS will each be awarded with one million Qantas Points.
It comes as Woolworths is facing scrutiny from the Greens-led Senate inquiry into supermarkets and Qantas looking to gain more favours with its members following the announcement of more rewards seats with its new two-tier offering.
I Fly Flat founder Steve Hui said bonus points deals were essentially marketing, in the same way retail brands did sales, incentivising people to act.
He said now that Aussies were travelling more post Covid, they were paying more attention to the price of flights.
“With people seeing and hearing of higher prices of travel, the habit and idea of collecting (rewards) points and using them for travel is attractive, particularly if you’re already spending with those partners you’re getting something for nothing,” Mr Hui said.
The self-confessed “Points Whisperer” said he was concerned about Qantas’ new two-tier rewards seats and the how many points the new “Classic Plus’ option was costing, fearing it could turn people off rewards programs.
“It worries me because it becomes a bit like a stealth evaluation. People can’t find the ‘Classic’ rewards seats and are using ‘Classic Plus’ out of frustration,” said.
“Now that Qantas has put a value on the points at 1-1.5 points, a bonus of 200 points is only worth $2. So now the value is really clear and the mystery isn’t there, will people continue to opt in?”
He said the best way to generate points was to double dip, by making purchases with a points-earning credit card and leaning into the airline partnerships on things you need, such as groceries, utilities and fuel.
Qantas Loyalty chief executive Andrew Glance said the new promotion was its “biggest ever points give away with Everyday Rewards” and would see 50 people become “instant points millionaires, allowing them to turn their everyday shop into a family holiday of a lifetime”.
One million Qantas Points could get you 62 economy class return flights between Melbourne and Sydney (992,000 Qantas Points plus taxes, fees and carrier charges); a 10-day South Africa Tour for two people with Qantas Tours, including flights and accommodation (799,900 Qantas Points) or return flights and a five night stay for a family of four at the Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay Resort & Spa with Qantas Holidays (from 484,71 Qantas Points).
