Two TikTokers believe they know the “secrets” that JB Hi-Fi uses to convince customers the company’s products are cheaper than its competitors.
Mason and Mai, who run the account @savingforboba, share hacks and reviews on the social media platform – some real and some as a joke, like swapping the F for fuel and E for empty letters on your car dashboard for “free fuel”.
In a recent more serious video, the couple claimed JB Hi-Fi tricks customers “into thinking everything is cheap” by using hand written signs, concrete floors, a simple warehouse layout and stacked products in its stores.
Mason and Mai said they made the video because they generally find themselves going to JB Hi-Fi first for a good deal.
“When we walk in, all those factors combined makes it ‘feel’ like we are in a wholesale warehouse so that influences our shopping behaviours,” they said.
“It’s gotten us a few times, only for us to realise better deals could be found at other places.”
Not everyone agreed that the store elements mentioned in the video were used to influence customers, with TikTok users taking to the comments to make jokes.
“Yeah the concrete floors make me buy stuff,” wrote one user.
“Wait till (sic) you see Bunnings,” said another.
One person wrote: “Doesn’t everyone just Google the price of everything first??? There’s no trickery involved”.
Another person agreed with the video and claimed Ikea, Bunnings and Costco had the same strategy.
Other users argued about whether JB Hi-Fi was generally cheaper or more expensive than its competitors.
The electronics and home entertainment retailer uses a low-cost operating model, with “compact store sizes” and “dense displays”.
According to the Financial Review, in 2020 the company had higher sales per square metre than every other Australian retailer and was comparable to the best retailers in the world.
