Supermarket trading hours for Labour Day public holiday
With a long weekend approaching for five states across Australia, here’s a quick guide to which shops will remain open.
Retail
Don't miss out on the headlines from Retail. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Five lucky states will enjoy an extended break this coming weekend, with the Labour Day and Queen’s Birthday public holiday Monday falling on October 3.
The break is commonly known in South Australia, NSW and the ACT as the Labour Day public holiday, but for Queensland, the extra day off coincides with the celebration of the Queen’s birthday.
There is also an October public holiday for some parts of Tasmania, but not until Thursday, October 6.
Victorians don’t get to enjoy a public holiday this coming Monday, having already been granted one as part of Grand Final weekend last week.
Western Australia and the Northern Territory also miss out on an October long weekend.
Aussies celebrating the public holiday this coming Monday will find store hours affected by special long weekend trading hours.
Supermarkets
For those in NSW or the ACT, it seems there will be no change in hours for the three major supermarkets – Coles, Woolworths and Aldi.
Most Queensland supermarkets will remain open from 9am-6pm, but some may operate to reduced hours.
South Australians, who are no strangers to reduced hours on public holidays, can access some CBD stores between 11am-5pm. However, all suburban stores will close. Regional supermarkets will operate as usual.
Liquor Stores
BWS and Dan Murphy’s have advised stores in relevant states will be under reduced trading hours, “but opening hours vary from store to store, so there is no blanket rule”.
Customers wishing to pay a visit to either store on Monday are encouraged to head to the BWS and Dan Murphy’s websites to check trading hours for their local store.
Other stores
Popular retailers like Bunnings will operate under reduced hours in NSW, ACT and Queensland, with shoppers again encouraged to check their local stores for opening times.
Kmart stores across Queensland will operate from 9am with some closing at 6pm.
Other stores will close at 4pm but shoppers are urged to check with their local stores to avoid disappointment.
NSW stores will open between 8am-10am but closing times will fluctuate from 3pm-8pm.
South Australian customers will again draw the short straw, with suburban Kmart stores closed all day. The Rundle Mall store will operate from 11am-5pm. Only regional stores in SA appear to be open.
All ACT Best&Less stores will be open.
NSW Best&Less stores will also operate as usual with the exceptions of Grafton, Gunnedah, Inverell, Lismore, and Toronto, which will close.
All South Australian stores will be close except Mt Gambier and all Queensland stores but Southport will be open.
Tasmania
Northern parts of Tasmania will enjoy a public holiday on Thursday, October 6 for the Royal Launceston Show. All major retailers should be open.
