One of Australia’s retail giants has announced a major update to their “Change of Mind” returns scheme and warned shoppers of items that no longer qualify for the policy.

A customer of a Big W branch in eastern Sydney took to social media to document new signage about the retailer’s list of now-ineligible items.

“Please be aware of the new regulations at Big W Eastgardens when wanting to return something,” they wrote.

“Share so people don’t get caught out when needing to return something.”

From February 3, items including cosmetics (if the hygiene seal is broken), beauty products, hosiery, underwear (excluding bras) and swimwear are among the items no longer allowed for “change of mind” returns.

Printer cartridges, personalised printing material, bedding and accessories (where the seal or packaging has been opened), tents, trampolines and furniture (where the package has been opened or components have been used) are also excluded from the policy.

Most social media users welcomed the changes.

“All 100% fair enough. I wouldn’t want to buy any of these items that had been returned,” one wrote.

One person said there should be “no change of mind returns” at all.

“I would have thought this was common sense and already in place,” another wrote.

According to their website, Big W has a 90 day change of mind return policy given the returned item isn’t part of the excluded list.

The product also has to be in its original saleable condition and packaging, with all accessories included, and not been worn or used and, if a perishable product, is not expired.

Other items on the list of excluded products include:

Food items, any item that is personalised, digital downloads, prepaid cards or vouchers, clearance items; and products purchased from BIG W Market, MyDeal, Everyday Market, Everyday Rewards Shop and eBay.
