A reclining armchair has been recalled after an electrical defect caused a sofa to catch fire resulting in property damage.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has warned consumers an electrical component in the cupholders of Nova Electrical Recliners could overheat causing a fire.

The product was made in China and sold through Supreme Furniture in NSW between January 2019 and October 2024.

An ACCC spokesman said the defect could result in death or serious injury from burns or property damage from fire.

A spokesman said consumers should check their reclining armchair or sofa to see if it was one of the affected models and immediately turn the power off and unplug the power cord.

Consumers who purchased an affected model should contact the Supreme Furniture store for instructions about how to disconnect the cupholder safely or to arrange for the cupholder to be replaced and a dummy plug inserted.
